I don't dare review a 19th century Russian author. He has survived, I ordered the book for study purposes and love the feel and format of this edition.
Its is more a social commentary on serfdom under the Czars than it is about Sportsmens hunting adventures..
This is one of Russia's brilliant writers and the stories are so straight forward and mostly comical it's awesome; but keep in mind this is only volume one of two.
The font on this book is so small that it is impossible to read.
I would have given it 0 stars if I could.

This edition is one of those soulless reprints, tiny font, graphics done by robot. "Includes a table of contents," says the 3-sentence forward, but this isn't so - all you get is the super-compressed text itself.
The book was impossible to read as the print size or font was minuscule. The only way to read it was with a magnifying glass. I didn't know how to return it so I took the small financial bite. I could not believe anyone would print a book with font the size of a drug label on a pill bottle. Otherwise, I look forward to reading this classic someday when I can find a reasonable sized copy.
The compressed font makes this edition impossible to read. There is no publisher or table of contents. Get snother edition.
This review is not about Ivan Turgenev's "A Sportsman's Sketches." It is about this published edition of that book.
Constance Garnett's translation of "A Sportsman's Sketches," though made some time ago, remains one of the best translations. However, this published edition is a shoddy, third-rate book apparently self-published using 's Createspace. The font is so tiny and horribly formatted that this book is essentially impossible to read, or to read with any level of enjoyment. Do not buy this published edition! You will merely need to repurchase a different edition of this book which is properly formatted and actually possible to read.
That said, I would recommend looking for a Constance Garnett translation, or an adaptation of one of her translations. Although she often translated quickly, she, almost better than anyone else, has captured the spirit and tone of the original Russian text.
