Balrek, though, isn't like other orcs, a fact that is rarely lost on those who encounter him. He has a brain and now, thanks to the Wizard Mangar, he has an education. He's tired of being cannon fodder for any would-be Dark Lord with delusions of world domination.
Balrek has a plan and it will either lead him to freedom or to a cell full of very sharp torture implements before a visit to the hangman.
Orcs are the oft-ignored and always maligned footsoldiers of evil in fantasy, but for once they take centre stage in a tongue-in-cheek tale of what happens to the minor characters after the point where most other fantasy epics finish.

Somehow the characters don't seem like real people as to their reactions to each other. I couldn't emphasize with any of the heroes as they were all amoral murderers. The story was actually over padded with descriptions and too wordy.The author needs to learn to show and not tell everything.

For me a sign of a good book is one that keeps you turning the pages wanting to find out what happens next, one where you know you are going to miss the characters and one that leaves you hoping there will be a sequel soon. This book ticked all those boxes for me. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
This is the 3rd of Darren Humphries books I have read. Having enjoyed the other 2 (To Infinityand The Sword In The Tree) very much, I was keen to see what else he could come up with. Well this is excellent and just as enjoyable, but not in exactly the same way. Here he has mostly left behind the silly humour of the other two and concentrated on writing an exciting and involving story.
The humour is still there in places, there were a couple of moments where I laughed in surprise and enjoyment at an unexpected piece of sly humour. Mainly though, it was the story and the characters which caught and held my attention.
The central characters and their relationship could easily have been unconvincing and I was very impressed at how much their differences seemed unimportant and everything seemed to just make sense. Balrek in particular was a very interesting character, and I felt there was always more to him than met the eye.
If I have a couple of minor quibbles they are exactly where Balrek got his remarkable abilities from and also I felt the actions of the elf character were a bit confusing at the very end. I was left thinking 'Huh, what on earth happened there?' But these were only very small issues with what was a very good and satisfying read.
